A good habit to get into when driving in the city, is to always keep your eyes moving. There is movement all around you at all times, between other vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists. Alternating your eyesight between what is in front of you, to your rear-view mirror that is on your windshield, to both rear-view mirrors on the sides every minute will keep you noticing everything.
This may seem a bit distracting at first, but once you get into the habit of doing it you will realize the benefits of doing it. Seeing who is turning and where, bicyclists or pedestrians coming up behind you and even the unanticipated animal. These are all accidents waiting for you to get involved with which, of course, you want no part of. Our eyes cannot be everywhere at the same time, but this is a very good way of seeing everything so you can anticipate anything.
